Battle of the Books

The Best Books Club is a program developed each year by the Librarians throughout the Edmonds School District.  The list of books is a combination of the Edmonds School District Librarians' Windows and Mirrors Award nominees list and the WLA Sasquatch Award list.  It contains about 20 books, of varied genres, for students in grades 4-6.

The librarians develop activities and produce a district-wide "Battle of the Best Books"  competition in late spring.  Students are challenged to read as many of the best books as possible during the year.  A list of the current best books is listed below.

Students can "report" on reading books in order to be a part of the program and receive rewards. They can take an online quiz through their Library Google Classroom in the fall or spring, or they can come to the library during recess for a short discussion/quiz  (just checking to see if they read the book). If a book is read in class, teachers may give their class a quiz.

Students who read and report 5 or more books by spring break in April are invited to an ice cream party and can apply to be on the trivia team that goes to the Battle of the Books.

What is the Battle of the Best Books?

The battle is a yearly, district-wide competition.  Each participating school sends two - 4 or 5 member teams to compete (about ten kids).  Teams are given several rounds of questions about the Best Books. The team with the most points at the end of the competition wins! It involves food and lots of fun! We usually go on a picnic to the Meadowdale Playfields Park when we return to campus at lunch time.

Next year's Battle of the Books will be at Spruce Elementary School in either May or June 2020.

Students who want to be on the Battle of the Books Teams apply by taking an additional quiz after the ice cream party on April 25th. They can be in grades 4-5-6 and from any classroom.  They are also responsible for organizing their team and preparing for the competition by coming to practice sessions in the library one day a week for a few weeks before the Battle.
